About
Many highly skilled migrants seeking to migrate to Canada apply from abroad for a permanent residency program, a study permit, or a temporary work permit but often find their applications are rejected in spite of their qualifications. At the same time, high numbers of highly skilled migrants who are already based in Canada and holding a work or study permit, often remain in limbo while waiting to receive permanent resident status.
Why Canada is an interactive series of short documentaries that portray the personal stories, expectations and challenges of three highly skilled migrants who recently settled in Ontario and Québec, as well as three prospective migrants who are based in Africa and Asia and are now struggling to migrate to Canada.
This documentary project is a part of the Skilled Migrant Decision Making (DEMA) project, which explores the decision-making processes of English-speaking and French-speaking highly skilled migrants and international students who chose to migrate to Canada during uncertain times, such as the global pandemic. For more information about the DEMA project, visit our project website.
Additionally, please visit the "Choosing Canada" scrollytelling visualization, which provides a visual overview of key insights related to migrants' decisions to move to Canada. Explore the visualization website here.
